Late last night (for us in the UK), Microsoft invited media to the launch of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It'll be Leap Day - Feb 29th - and the physical event will overlap with Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
The news is pretty widely covered everywhere, here on Mashable. Although no insight on the Windows 8 team blog, who are busy elsewhere, no doubt.
It was generally known that 'end Feb' was the expected ETA. And the Consumer Preview brings us an important step along the road.
Launching at MWC might be opportunism (calendar falls right, lots of media in town), might be a symbolic statement around mobility, or might be the place to reach a broader audience of potential application developers, or it might be the right place to share any insight on any convergence of Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
